Award of the Foreign Minister’s Commendations for FY2019 (July 16, 2019)

     On July 16, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan announced the name of recipients of the Foreign Minister’s Commendations for FY2019. The following individual is awarded the Commendations from Colorado.

John Hopper, Dean of Students, Granada High School
(Services: Promotion of mutual understanding between Japan and the U.S.A.)

     Mr. John Hopper, Dean of Students, Granada High School, recognized the historical value of the site of Granada War Relocation Center, known as Amache Camp, where Japanese Americans were relocated during WWII, and has conducted preservation activities at the site since 1990. Dean Hopper organized the Amache Preservation Association at Granada High School in 1993 and built an organizational framework for maintaining the physical site of Amache. These activities have contributed to promoting mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and United States.

     The Foreign Minister’s Commendations are awarded to individuals and groups for outstanding achievements in international fields in order to acknowledge their contributions to the promotion of friendship between Japan and other countries and areas. The Commendations also aim to promote the understanding and support of the Japanese public for the activities of the recipients. The Consulate-General of Japan in Denver extends its sincere congratulations to Mr. Hopper, and expresses its deep respect for his contributions and achievement.
