In the Japan Cup, there are four levels according to ability and each team consists of three students who have studied Japanese in high school and college. They compete against each other by answering questions about Japan and Japanese language.

A total of 130 students registered for this year's competition, which is the highest number of participants in its history. The 12 teams (3 teams from each level) that won the preliminary rounds in the morning proceeded on to the final rounds in the afternoon.
