Undergraduate Students
This scholarship offers applicants the opportunity to spend up to 5 years at a Japanese college or university as an undergraduate degree student. Please read the Guidelines linked below for further details.
Acceptable fields of study are:
(1) Social Sciences and Humanities
(2) Natural Sciences
The general timeline for the 2026 scholarship application/selection process is outlined below:

(*SEPTEMBER – OCTOBER 2026: Departure for Japan and beginning of scholarship period. *In principle, applicants must be able to arrive in Japan between April 1, 2026, and April 7, 2026; however, applicants may directly enroll with a university if they who have sufficient Japanese language proficiency or the undergraduate course at the university does not require Japanese language proficiency. If this applies to an applicant, the autumn term may be an option depending on the university’s academic calendar.)

Complete applications must be received by this date. Applications submitted after 5 p.m. on May 23, 2025 will not be considered.

Interview and Test
The interview will take place on Wednesday, June 18, 2025 (this schedule is subject to change). The format of the interview will be announced in the notification of being invited to interview and exams.
Written exams will be conducted in-person on Thursday, JUNE 26 2025 at the Consulate-General of Japan in Denver.
You will receive an email from the MEXT Scholarship Coordinator with information on whether you are invited to test and interview, as well as any other pertinent details.

The documents listed below comprise the entire application packet including informational guidelines as well as application materials to be submitted. Application documents should all be submitted together in one packet to the MEXT Scholarship Office at the Japanese Consulate located in Denver.
