Undergraduate Students
This scholarship offers applicants the opportunity to spend up to 5 years at a Japanese college or university as an undergraduate degree student. Please read the Guidelines linked below for further details.
Acceptable fields of study are:
(1) Social Sciences and Humanities
(2) Natural Sciences
The general timeline for the 2024 scholarship application/selection process is as follows:
LATE APRIL - MAY 1: MEXT scholarship application becomes available
JUNE 1: Application deadline
EARLY JUNE: Notification of being invited to interview & exams. The format of the interview will be announced in the notification
JUNE 21: Exams held (first screening)
MID-LATE JUNE: Interviews held (first screening)
JULY: Notification of first screening results
JANUARY 2024: Notification of secondary screening results (from MEXT) and university placement
MARCH 2024: Travel arrangements to Japan are made for the scholarship recipient
APRIL 2024: Departure for Japan and beginning of scholarship period
(*SEPTEMBER – OCTOBER 2024: Departure for Japan and beginning of scholarship period. *In principle, applicants must be able to arrive in Japan between April 1, 2024, and April 7, 2024, however, applicants who have sufficient Japanese language proficiency or the undergraduate course at the university does not require Japanese language proficiency may directly enroll to the university. If this applies to an applicant, the autumn term may be an option depending on the university’s academic calendar.)

Complete applications must be received by this date. Applications submitted after 5pm on June 1, 2023 will not be considered.

Interview and Test
The interview will be scheduled to take place between June 12, 2023 and June 30, 2023 (this schedule is subject to change). The format of the interview will be announced in the notification of being invited to interview and exams.
Written exams will be conducted in-person on Wednesday, June 21, 2023 at the Consulate-General of Japan in Denver.
You will be contacted directly by the MEXT Scholarship Coordinator to inform you whether or not you are invited to test and interview in addition to any other pertinent details via email.

The documents listed below comprise the entire application packet including informational guidelines as well as application materials to be submitted. Application documents should all be submitted together in one packet to the MEXT Scholarship Office at the Japanese Consulate located in Denver.
