Research Students
This scholarship offers applicants the opportunity to spend 18 or 24 months conducting independent research under a Japanese professor.
Any field of study is eligible for the scholarship, but applicants must find a Japanese professor willing to supervise their research. However, this does not guarantee that the applicant will be placed with that professor. Please read the Guidelines linked below for further details.
The general timeline for the 2024 scholarship application/selection process is as follows:
LATE APRIL - EARLY MAY: MEXT scholarship application documents become available
JUNE 1: Application deadline
EARLY JUNE: Notification of being invited to interview & exam. The format of the interview will be announced in the notification
MID-LATE JUNE: Interviews take place (first screening)
JUNE 30: A Japanese exam held (first screening)
JULY: Notification of first screening results
AUGUST 25 (JST): Applicant must contact Japanese universities requesting admission by this date
SEPTEMBER 28 (MDT): Applicant must provide Letter(s) of Provisional Acceptance to the Denver Consulate by this date
JANUARY 2024: Notification of secondary screening results (from MEXT) and university placement
MARCH 2024: Travel arrangements to Japan are made for the scholarship recipient
APRIL or SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2024: Departure for Japan and beginning of scholarship period
Application Deadline

Complete applications must be received by this date. Applications submitted after 5PM on June 1, 2023 will not be considered.

Interview and Test
The interviews will be scheduled to take place between June 12, 2023 and June 30, 2023. The format of the interview will be announced in the notification of being invited to interview and exam.
A Japanese Language Exam will be conducted in-person on Thursday, June 30, 2023 at the Consulate-General of Japan in Denver.
You will be contacted directly by the MEXT Scholarship Coordinator to inform you whether or not you are invited to test and interview in addition to any other pertinent details via email.
