NOTICE: From today onward, due to the COVID-19 pandemic the 2022 MEXT Scholarship selection process is subject to change, including cancellation of this year's selection process.


This scholarship offers applicants the opportunity to spend 18 or 24 months conducting independent research under a Japanese professor.

Any field of study is eligible for the scholarship, but applicants must find a Japanese professor willing to supervise their research. However, this does not guarantee that the applicant will be placed with that professor. Please read the Guidelines linked below for further details.

The general timeline for the 2022 scholarship application/selection process is as follows:

APRIL: MEXT scholarship application documents become available
JUNE 9: Application deadline
JUNE: Notification of being invited to interview & interviews and examinations held (first screening)
LATE JUNE: Interviews held (first screening)
JULY: Notification of first screening results
BY AUGUST 27: Applicant must contact Japanese universities requesting admission
BY SEPTEMBER 29: Applicant must provide Letter(s) of Provisional Acceptance to the Denver Consulate
JANUARY 2022: Notification of secondary screening results (from MEXT) and university placement
MARCH 2022: Travel arrangements to Japan are made for scholarship recipient
APRIL or SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2022: Departure for Japan and beginning of scholarship period

Application Deadline

Wednesday, June 9, 2021
Complete applications must be received by this date. Applications submitted after 5PM on June 9, 2021 will not be considered.

Interview and Test

Written exams for Research Students will not be conducted for the 2022 selection process.  Therefore, please submit *Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) documentation indicating proficiency of N2 or higher, if obtained. *Applicants are still eligible to apply even without the above documentation.

All interviews will be conducted online for the 2022 selection process, and will be scheduled on June 25 or the last week of June

You will be contacted directly by the MEXT Scholarship Coordinator to inform whether you are or are not invited to interview, as well as of any other pertinent details. You will be contacted via email.

The documents listed below comprise the entire application packet including informational guidelines as well as application materials to be submitted. All Application documents should be submitted together in one packet to the MEXT Scholarship Office at the Denver Consulate.
