Japanese Studies Students Scholarship
This scholarship offers applicants the opportunity to spend a year continuing their study of Japanese language or culture at one of several universities in Japan.
The general timeline for this scholarship application/selection process is as follows:
December: Applications become available
February: Applications are due
March: Interviews and testing for selected candidates
June: Selected scholarship recipient finalized and informed
July-September: arrangements made for scholar (school, travel, accommodations, etc.)
September-October: Scholarship recipient departs

Complete applications must be received by this date. Applications submitted after 5 PM on January 31, 2023 will not be considered.

Japanese Language Test and Interview
Japanese Language Test
The in-person Japanese test will be conducted on Monday, February 27, 2023. Applicants who pass the application screening will be notified of the testing time by Friday, February 17, 2023.
Interviews
You will be contacted directly by the MEXT Scholarship Coordinator for your scheduled interview date and time. Interviews will be conducted during business hours between 10 am and 4 pm on or after the Japanese testing date (Monday, February 27, 2023). The majority of correspondences will be conducted via email.

The documents listed below comprise the entire application packet, including informational guidelines and application materials to be submitted. Application documents should be submitted in one packet to the MEXT Scholarship Office at the Japanese Consulate in Denver.

Application Notes
- Applicants must have U.S. citizenship and currently live in the states of Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, or Wyoming. U.S. citizens living in other states should apply through the consulate responsible for their state. (See also: The Embassy of Japan in Washington, D.C. website - How to Apply ) Non-U.S. citizens should apply through the Japanese Embassy in their country of citizenship.

- Only complete application packets will be reviewed.
- All application materials should arrive at the Consulate in one complete packet.
- Letters of reference should be in an unopened envelope with the recommender’s signature across the back flap.
